Field Tour - Land, People, and Fire in Western Ireland

The field tour will take place on Wedesday afternoon.  Transportation and lunch will be provided. The field tour is included in the cost of your registration. 

The bus will depart the hotel at 12:00pm

Stop 1: Gleann Na Gealt, on the farm of Ms. Brigid O Connor

This stop should take approx 2 hours and participants will divide into groups of approx 10 and attend 5 dispersed stations with experts to discuss and interpret:

  • Traditional Farming Practice in Western Ireland
  • Vegetation Identification – Main Fuel Species of Concern
  • Vegetation Folklore and Heritage
  • Vegetation management practice
  • Traditional fire use practice in Western Ireland

Stop 2: The next stop is Glenteenassig forest park, managed by Coillte Teoranta, the Irish state Forestry Board. This stop will take 3 hours and will involve 5 workstations on the following topics

  • Irish Forestry – Historical development and relationship with Fire risks
  • Fire Weather, Detection, and Analysis
  • Fire Suppression capabilities; Fire and Rescue Service
  • Coillte Fire teams and Equipment; National Park Service Fire Teams and Equipment
  • Live Fire Demonstration
